João Baptista Borges
Minister of Energy and Water
H.E. João Baptista Borges was appointed Minister of Energy and Water in 2011. Prior to occupying this position; he served in the Government as Secretary of State of Energy from 2010 to 2011 and Vice-Minister from 2008 to 2010.
After concluding studies in Electrical engineering at the Agostinho Neto University (Luanda – Angola), Mr. João Baptista Borges joined in 1990 EDEL-EP, the public utility responsible for the distribution of electricity in Luanda, the capital city of Angola with actually more than five millions of inhabitants.
He progressively held positions with higher responsibilities in EDEL-EP, from Project manager in 1991. Later he became Member of the Executive Board of EDEL-EP in charge of the Technical Portfolio and Investment portfolio and from 2005 to 2008 Mr.João Baptista Borges held the position of Chairman and Chief Executive of EDEL-EP before being appointed as Vice-Minister of Energy, later on Secretary of State of Energy and then Minister of Energy and Water.
As Minister of Energy and Water, Honourable João Baptista Borges supervises two infrastructure sectors very important for the country´s development program comprising Project portfolios in the areas of power and water estimated to 23,21 thousands millions USD and 5,94 thousands millions USD respectively for the 2013-1017 period.
