Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO)
Mr. Seyed Jalaledin Alavi Sabzevari has been the Deputy Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) since January 2014, leading ECO Secretariat’s activities in areas such as energy, environment, human development, disaster risk reduction, drugs control, as well as the administrative management of the Secretariat. During his tenure in ECO, he led ECO delegations in the United Nations and other forums in above areas. He has also been involved in making ECO partnerships with relevant regional and international organizations.
Before joining ECO, he was a career senior Iranian diplomat serving for more than two decades in regional and multilateral relations. He was one of the Iran’s negotiators during extensive negotiations with the European Union for a trade and cooperation agreement as well as discussions for Iran-EU energy cooperation framework from 2001 to 2003. He has also been directly involved in attempts to facilitate Iran’s membership negotiations for accession to the WTO.
As a national delegate and in 1990s, he also attended many rounds of multilateral negotiations on sustainable development in the context of the second committee of the UNGA, CSD, Rio+5 as well as negotiations for a legally binding instrument on forests.
