Kanat Bozumbayev

Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!

Welcome to the Ministerial Conference «Meeting the Challenge of Sustainable Energy» and the 8th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development!

The Republic of Kazakhstan, being an example of sustainable and consistent political and economic development in the region, remains a reliable and responsible member of the international energy security system.

Energy security is a key issue for almost all countries. Access to energy is necessary to strengthen economies, to protect ecosystems, to improve the environment and quality of life, and to achieve equality.

In recent years, the Republic of Kazakhstan has adopted a Concept for Kazakhstan Transition to a Green Economy and signed the Paris Climate Change Agreement. Moreover, the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, initiated the Green Bridge Partnership Program aimed at strengthening green economic growth in Central Asia through international cooperation and the promotion of technology transfer, knowledge exchange and financial support.

The Head of State also proposed the establishment of an International Centre for the Development of Green Technologies and Investment Projects in Astana under the auspices of the United Nations. I am confident that the interactive platform of the Ministerial Meeting and the Forum will serve as a catalyst for launching and supporting the Centre, which is to become an important mechanism for promoting green growth in our region.

Kazakhstan invites the world energy community to have a global dialog to find the best solutions for balanced development of alternative and traditional energy and to ensure the availability of energy resources. The dialog is intended to provide better insight into current global processes, as well as the role and place of traditional energy in the world’s future energy system, and to develop political incentives to implement national strategies.

The decisions and agreements reached will be included in the Manifest of Values to be adopted following the EXPO and will be the basis for determining new priorities and a policy of actions for attaining the objectives of sustainable energy and the goals of sustainable development.

I hope the upcoming events will open up a new chapter of mutually beneficial cooperation for many countries and will strengthen international cooperation for achieving the goals of sustainable energy.

I wish you fruitful work, success and all the best.
